First aid is a vital skill that everyone should learn – and what better time to be reminded of that than on World First Aid Day? Even the most basic knowledge can make the difference between life and death in an emergency.
From treating burns and cuts to performing CPR, even a few simple skills can empower anyone to act in an emergency.
This year, take a moment to explore these four outstanding charities. Each plays a vital role in educating the public, providing first aid training, or delivering frontline care where it’s needed most.
St John Ambulance
Known lovingly as ‘England’s First Aid Charity’, St John Ambulance is easily the most recognisable and has been saving lives for over a century. They offer certified training courses for the public and workplaces, free educational videos, and a mobile app packed with emergency guidance.
Their volunteers from St John also provide first aid cover at thousands of events across the country every year.
Red Cross
Whether it’s the British Red Cross, American Red Cross, or Canadian Red Cross, these organisations are global leaders in first aid education and humanitarian response.
Their websites and mobile apps provide simple, step-by-step instructions for common emergencies, and they offer both online and in-person courses for individuals and businesses.
First Aid Africa
Humanitarian work and first aid often goes hand-in-hand and this is no different for First Aid Africa, a UK-based charity delivering vital first aid training and medical supplies across East and Southern Africa.
In many of the regions they serve, ambulances and hospitals are out of reach, so their mission is to help equip local teachers, students, and communities with the skills to respond in an emergency.
StreetDoctors
One of the newer first aid charities, StreetDoctors is a remarkable UK charity that trains young people affected by violence in emergency first aid. Delivered by volunteer healthcare professionals, their workshops teach how to respond to bleeding, unconsciousness, and trauma – often in areas where knife crime is a serious concern. Their ethos is to turn bystanders into first responders, giving young people the confidence to act in a crisis.
At Smiley Movement, we elevate the work of charities across the world. Here are three charities whose causes align with the themes in this post.
